PROGRAM OVERVIEW

When a collection of people work together to create value for both customers and the organization, all factors in the equation are set up for success. By building a talent mindset, a company is able to compete more effectively in the marketplace; that’s why it’s essential for managers to create simple and practical talent development processes. During this three-day program, Keith HalperinAllan Gray, and Scott Downey will guide you in identifying the capabilities your organization needs and how you — the leader — can assist. You’ll learn to break down barriers and create an environment with simple and practical talent development processes in order to generate an effective talent-focused organization.

This program is especially beneficial if you are a middle-level manager new to your managerial role, an upper-level manager looking to take your people management capabilities to the next level, or you have similar managerial responsibilities to these roles. While attending as a team is not required, you can maximize your experience by bringing others from your organization! New managerial practices can be more effective when approached together.

For questions about this program or more information on who should attend, please contact Betty Jones-Bliss at bettyso@purdue.edu or (217) 549-2883.

 PROGRAM CONTENT

Aligning Talent with Strategic Capabilities

Surveys indicate that the industry is looking for people with strong interpersonal communication skills, critical thinking skills, cultural and gender awareness and a knowledge of business, among other characteristics and capabilities. If every company’s number one strength is its people, this cannot possibly be a strategic advantage as the core of strategy is differentiation. This session will evaluate what capabilities your strategy requires and determine the talent necessary to execute that strategy at the highest level.

Leaders’ Role in Developing and Engaging

There’s no single right leadership style. The best leaders are agile and versatile in working with their employees, focusing on employees’ ongoing development and engagement in their increasingly complex work. A good leader shifts from boss and evaluator to coach, partner and cheerleader. In this session, you’ll learn how best to develop employees, build their commitment and decide what type of leader to be when.

Performance Management and Execution

Inherently important parts of retaining talent are assessing, coaching and rewarding performance. This places performance management as a cornerstone to financial success. Using the concepts from One Page Talent Management and The Four Disciplines of Execution, this session will examine the science of performance management and lay out a simple tool you can use to maximize success.

Best Practices for Developing Talent

Throughout this workshop, you will have opportunities to summarize your thoughts and gain actionable insights to implement when you return to the work environment. Developing people is only one role managers play. An organized approach includes expressing care, challenging growth, providing support and resources, sharing power, expanding possibilities and working together.
